Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind) stars as Charles Darwin, a man torn between his faith and scientific studies. Nearing completion of what is to become one of the most important books of all time: “On the Origin of Species” (containing the foundation for evolutionary biology) Darwin struggles to come to terms with the death of his young daughter while also earning the scorn of his religiously devout wife (Jennifer Connelly). Based on the book “Annie’s Box,” a biography penned by Darwin’s great-great-grandson Randal Keynes using personal letters and diaries of the Darwin family, Jon Amiel's film takes a unique look at Darwin and his love for his family, uncovering a man at war with himself over what could be the outcome of a lifetime of controversial study.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali—like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough—chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie—Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film chronicles Joan and Cherie’s tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out. |

Directed by rising talent Claire McCarthy, "The Waiting City" tells the story of an outwardly happy couple (played by Radha Mitchell and Joel Edgerton) who journey to India to collect their adopted baby. When they arrive in Kolkata they discover that the adoption arrangements have still be finalised. Soon the intoxicating mystic power of the city pulls them in separate and unexpected directions. The first Australian film to be shot entirely in India, "The Waiting City" is an intimate, complex story of transformation, set against an exhilarating backdrop. |

LONDON ASSURANCE
by Dion Boucicault
Saturday July 17,
Sunday July

Nicholas Hynter directs Fiona Shaw and Simon Russell Beale in a brilliantly funny revival of Boucicault's screwball relationship comedy. Dion Boucicault, the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, wrote London Assurance in 1841 and thereby created – in Sir Harcourt and Lady Spanker – two of the great comic roles of the English stage.
