Harper (Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley) travels to the English countryside to heal after the death of her partner in London. Welcomed to the estate by the landlord (Rory Kinnear), Harper explores the grounds where she crosses paths with a naked stranger. Calling the police to have him removed from the property after he follows her back to the house and attempts to break-in, she is perturbed to later discover he has been released without charge. Despite her best efforts to relax, continued aggressions and actions by the men in the local village cause her to question her grip on reality.
Riveting from beginning to end, Garland's latest sees the filmmaker move into more experimental territory, recalling Darren Aronofsky's Mother!, Ari Aster's Hereditary, and folk horror cult favourite The Wicker Man.
