Air

In the tradition of The Social Network, The Big Short and Moneyball comes director Ben Affleck’s riveting drama AIR, revealing the make-or-break negotiations that would create a pop culture phenomenon.

The year is 1984 and sportswear has crossed over into the American mainstream. Converse and Adidas dominate the market while Nike languishes in both popularity and celebrity appeal. Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon), charged with finding minor league talent on the verge of their big break, is struggling to attract basketball players to Nike; the brand Phil Knight (Affleck) started out of the boot of his car. Spying relative unknown Michael Jordan at a basketball game, Vaccaro decides to go all in to attract the Chicago Bulls player to Nike despite competition from bigger, wealthier brands. Working with colleagues Rob Strasser (Jason Bateman) and Howard White (Chris Tucker), Vaccaro embarks on a risky venture while also hoping to convince Jordan’s protective mother Deloris (Viola Davis) to share his vision.

Featuring a soundtrack filled with 80s bangers, meticulous production design and a screenplay by newcomer Alex Convery that is certain to figure in the 2024 awards race, AIR is immediately one of the best films of the year. Co-starring Marlon Wayans and Chris Messina.
