All We Imagine as Light
The first Indian film to screen in competition at Cannes in 30 years is a melancholic musing of two nurses set against the colourful and charismatic backdrop of modern-day Mumbai.
Nurse Prabha’s routine is troubled when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband who is working in Germany. Meanwhile, her younger roommate Anu tries in vain to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend, of whom her family is unlikely to approve of due to his differing religion.
Winning the Grand Prix at Cannes, Payal Kapadia (A Night of Knowing Nothing) directs a tender triumph sure to be a favourite among lovers of slow cinema.
Some Malayalam, Hindi and Marathi language, English subtitles.
