Dating Amber
The year: 1995. The place: County Kildare, Ireland. 17-year-old Eddie (Fionn O’Shea, Normal People) lives with younger brother Jack (newcomer Evan O’Connor) and his not-so-happily married parents. His dad Ian (Barry Ward) is a high-ranking Irish Army officer at a military college, while mother Hannah (Sharon Horgan) looks after the home. Chided at school for being gay, Eddie hopes to quell any questions about his (closeted) sexuality by 'dating' classmate Amber (Lola Pettucrew) - a lesbian who has yet to come out to her mother. Quickly developing a close friendship, the two teens embark on a journey of self-discovery as they learn that the path to self-acceptance is best travelled with a friend.
Directed by David Freyne, the critically acclaimed DATING AMBER is a semi-autobiographical tale for the filmmaker based on his own experiences of growing up in a less accepting era.
