Kneecap

Winner of this year’s Audience Award at Sundance, the beginnings of Irish hip-hop group Kneecap are retraced in Rich Peppiatt’s ground-shaking comedy-drama.

When fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed "low life scum" Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip-hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish language, Kneecap fast become the unlikely figureheads of a Civil Rights movement to save their mother tongue.

Armed with a blend of native Irish and English verses and furious, politically-charged rhymes, the trio must overcome police, paramilitaries and politicians trying to silence their defiant ketamine-fuelled sound. A fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic co-starring Michael Fassbender, KNEECAP is a rollicking trip into the meaning of pure defiance.

Some Irish Gaelic language, English subtitles.
