Minamata
Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy, Aileen Mioko Smith and Hiroyuki Sanada star in MINAMATA, the true story of photographer W. Eugene Smith’s attempt to expose a wide-reaching health scandal when he is sent to document the effects of mercury poisoning in the Japanese coastal city of Minamata.
The year is 1971. W. Eugene Smith (Depp) is past his glory days as a revered photojournalist, reclusive and disconnected from society, when Life Magazine editor Robert Hayes (Nighy) gives him a secret mission to document: the Japanese city of Minamata, where citizens are being ravaged by mercury poisoning. Becoming immersed in the community and its campaign to receive recognition from the corporation who was responsible, Smith soon finds himself embroiled in the people's fight for their own lives.
Directed by Andrew Levitas, MINAMATA is a heartfelt tale of redemption and triumph over adversity, showing Depp in his element.
