Power of the Dog, The

Winner of Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival as well as Best Film at San Sebastian, Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG is a gripping drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Kirsten Dunst set almost a century ago.

Handsome Montana rancher Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch) is lord of his considerable domain. He is a cowboy as raw as the cow hides he prepares with his cowhands; distinctly different from his gentrified brother George (Jesse Plemons). On their way to market the brothers meet Rose (Dunst), a widowed proprietress, and her impressionable son Peter (Smit-McPhee). While Phil initially behaves cruelly towards them, George instigates a courtship that soon sees Rose and her son move into the brothers' family manor. Taunting Rose as revenge for the change to his surroundings, Phil's mockery of her son is more overt until a chance discovery threatens to upend the extended family's power dynamic.
