Stillwater
Matt Damon gives one of the finest performances of his career in a dramatic thriller directed by Tom McCarthy (Spotlight, The Station Agent) and co-written by the screenwriter of A Prophet, Thomas Bidegain.
American oil-driller Bill Baker (Damon) is a widower residing in Oklahoma, between jobs and surviving on a diet of fast food and Fox News. Travelling to the picturesque French port city of Marseille, Bill is not a tourist - he is visiting his daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin), who is serving a sentence in the local jail for a crime she claims she did not commit. When Allison tells her father she has new information that may lead to finding the person she believes committed the crime, Bill learns that his daughter has already exhausted all legal avenues. Determined not to let her down, he embarks on a personal investigation that will not only break new ground in her case but also permanently change the man he is.
Director McCarthy's not-at-all-conventional drama flawed critics upon its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, depicting a moving and nuanced drama of how our environment can evolve the self. Damon and McCarthy unflinchingly depict how the world sees many Americans in the wake of recent events, crafting a gripping feature that should figure in year-end award-season discussions.
