The Man Who Fell to Earth + The Wicker Man (1973)
DOUBLE FEATURE! Back-to-back cult ‘70s horror hits!
David Bowie as you’ve never seen him: a literal alien. Directed by Nicolas Roeg with story by Walter Tevis, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH is the story of one alien who must pose as a human in order to save his home planet. Thomas Jerome Newton (Bowie) is an alien who has come to Earth in search of water to save his home planet. Aided by lawyer Oliver Farnsworth (Buck Henry), Thomas uses his knowledge of advanced technology to create profitable inventions. While developing a method to transport water, Thomas meets Mary-Lou (Candy Clark), a quiet hotel clerk, and begins to fall in love with her. Just as he is ready to leave Earth, Thomas is intercepted by the U.S. government, and his entire plan is threatened. Released in 1976 and ahead of its time, Roeg’s film is a meditation on humans and their culture, and Bowie is sublime.
THE WICKER MAN has achieved true cult status as one of the most revered horror films in cinema history, despite a difficult production and heavily cut original theatrical release. The search for the fabled missing scenes has only added to the myth surrounding a film that still inspires filmmakers to this day. Directed by Robin Hardy and with a cast featuring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland and Diane Cilento, the film tells the chilling story of a puritan Police Sergeant who arrives on a remote Scottish Island in search of a missing girl only to find the Pagan locals claiming she never existed.
