Angelina Jolie delivers a career-best performance as the world’s greatest female opera singer, Maria Callas, in Pablo Larrain’s latest.

The tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of Maria Callas is relived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris, as she attempts to rediscover her voice after years off-stage.

With MARIA, Larrain concludes a trilogy of biopics centred on iconic 20th century women (comprised also of Jackie and Spencer) by way of another lavish character study of a complicated figure. Jolie’s tour de force turn as Callas (headlined by an astounding vocal performance) and Larrain’s signature lush direction, complimented by Edward Lachman’s (Carol) gorgeous cinematography, punctuate a tender tribute to an opera icon.
